Can you really be profitable where another business has failed?

I am skeptical about advice on how to start a restaurant when it involves buying a restaurant that went bankrupt. Potential entrepreneurs are informed to open shop in a place that closed down. Isn’t there a reason why that restaurant could not thrive in that particular location? Is it really smart to take over in the same place where a previous business failed? Unless you think that you have a better marketing plan, I do not see how it will work. Unless you offer better quality food and can convince people that they will enjoy the food, I think it is best to open a restaurant in an area where success is more likely to happen.
