How a Toddler Grows Aware of Inner Sensations to Recognize Potty Time
27 July 2010
When a baby achieves their first birthday, your child will start to recognize the sensation of a full rectum or bladder. This in turn is a signal a need to eliminate this sensation. In many cases, your child will show her awareness through behavior. Your child may squat and grunt when they are about to have a bowel movement or tugging at their diaper when she needs to urinate.
Even though your child will still not be able to delay the function they sense taking place, you should reinforce this awareness of the link between the inner feeling of fullness and the act of excretion or urination. Contact your local Addison pediatrician if you have questions
