Hallux manipulation
Hallux valgus is another name for what is common called bunions. In this case the big toe is bent over towards the smaller toes causing and enlargement of the big toe joint. The initial treatment for this is hallux manipulation and advice regarding footwear. Strapping or splints are sometimes use, but are generally not successful at realigning the toe, but may give some pain relief is the joint is painful. Surgery is the most common treatment for hallux valgus and is generally the most successful treatment. Surgery is the only way to straighten the toe or change its alignment. Conservative measures do not correct the alignment but can help with painful symptoms.
