Helping needy children in Angola

Do you remember the war in Angola? It ended five years ago or so, but lasted almost 30 years and in the process thousands upon thousands of people were killed. Almost as bad, when the peace accords were singed the survivors, especially the surviving children, were swept up in a new battle — a fight against starvation and malnutrition. In fact, agencies called it one of the worst aftermaths of war on the African continent in recent decades. Australian Diane Stevens, working for Save the Children UK said in her many years of working in nutrition the Angola aftermath was "the worst that I’ve ever seen."

This was a time to start helping needy children.Families were stumbling in to UN refugee camps after walking weeks to get help. Mothers and children were walking 180 kilometers without food, in a desperate attempt to survive long enough to reach the UN food bases. The UN World Food Programme was feeding one million people soon after hostilities ceased, and that number went up much higher.
