The Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y

Gastric bypass surgery is now routinely performed as the preferred solution for many patients suffering from morbid obesity and one of the most popular forms of gastric bypass surgery remains the roux-en-y. This particular form of surgery has been performed for many years and is generally agreed to be one of the most successful forms of weight loss surgery, not simply producing excellent weight loss in the short term but also allow patients to maintain that weight loss with relative ease. The roux-en-y has become even more popular in recent years since the introduction of laparoscopic surgical techniques, in which surgery is performed through a series of small incisions rather than the tradition single large ‘open surgery’ incision. The laparoscopic roux-en-y was first performed in 1993 and, although it is one of the most difficult operations to perform laparoscopically, it has nonetheless proved to be very successful.
