When Is Macular Pucker Surgery Recommended
The nerve tissue in the retina of our eyes is called the macular. Mainly responsible for the portrayal of sharp images, and how well we read the fine print in newspapers and novels, the macula normally lies flat. If damage, such as a detached retina or other injury or eye disease occurs, it causes a wrinkling or puckering. The result is a distortion or blurring of objects. In severe cases, macular pucker surgery may need to be performed to correct the condition, and may even restore visual clarity. The surgical procedure is done while the patient is awake, yet anesthetized. The surgeon removes a substance much like a gelatin that fills the area behind the eyes. Once the membrane and fluid are removed, the macula should then lie flat once more.
