What are the Risks Associated with IVF?

Most patients who are considering in vitro fertilization (IVF) recognize that no medical procedure is completely risk free, but they are still interested in knowing the potential setbacks up front.  The good news is that IVF is a relatively safe procedure for healthy young adults, and most of the negatives are associated with a failure to produce a successful pregnancy.  The fertilized eggs may not always begin to grow in their mothers’ uterus or they may even be rejected.  There are also rare instance of still births and abnormal pregnancies.  Most of the latter occur in proportion to the statistical average for normal child births.  Nonetheless, prospective patients should be familiar with the IVF risks before choosing this treatment.
